'Granting bliss and removing suffering, rejoicing, and being equal toward sentient beings' explains their aspects. Granting bliss is benevolence; removing suffering is compassion; rejoicing is sympathetic joy; being equal toward sentient beings is equanimity, meaning being equal toward enemies and friends, casting aside enemies and casting aside friends; hence it is called 'equanimity'. Thinking, 'May all sentient beings obtain such bliss,' one enters the absorption of benevolence. Thinking, 'May all sentient beings be free from such suffering,' one enters the absorption of compassion. Thinking, 'That sentient beings have obtained bliss and are free from suffering—how delightful!' one enters the absorption of sympathetic joy. Thinking, 'All sentient beings are entirely equal, without enemy or friend,' one enters the absorption of equanimity.
