'Five and eight in defilement and purification': five refers to the five feeling indriyas of pleasure and the rest; eight refers to the five of faith and the rest and the three untainted indriyas. In defilement and purification, they are respectively predominant. The five feelings of pleasure and the rest are predominant in defilement because the latencies such as lust increase along with them: pleasurable and joyful feelings conform to lust, sorrowful and painful feelings conform to anger, and equanimity feeling conforms to delusion. The eight indriyas of faith and the rest are predominant in purification because pure phenomena grow and develop in accordance with them.
