"If possessing pleasure or body, each definitely possesses four" means that when possessing the pleasure faculty, there must be life, mind, and equanimity. When possessing the body faculty, there also must be life, mind, and equanimity; hence it says "each." As for possessing pleasure without possessing body, this refers to a noble one born in the formless realm: in the formless realm, one possesses the untainted pleasure faculty of the lower three dhyānas. As for possessing body without possessing pleasure, this refers to an ordinary person born in the fourth dhyāna: that realm lacks the pleasure faculty, and the pleasure faculties of the lower three dhyānas have already been severed by them; since they are an ordinary person, they cannot possess the lower untainted pleasure, and therefore they do not possess the pleasure faculty but do possess the body faculty. As for possessing pleasure without possessing joy, this refers to an ordinary person born in the third dhyāna.
