"Of the past and future times, there are three each" is the section on the three times. Past and future each have non-possessions belonging to the three times. If a phenomenon is present, it has only past and future non-possession, and no present non-possession, because when a phenomenon is present, that which is possessed is necessarily attained, so there is definitely no non-possession. The old translation asserting that present phenomena have [present] non-possession is completely erroneous. Furthermore, when a past phenomenon has past non-possession, it is either prior to the phenomenon or posterior to the phenomenon; this is said in terms of non-possession and the unpossessed phenomenon being at the present moment both in the past. If a past phenomenon has present non-possession, it is solely posterior to the phenomenon. If a past phenomenon has future non-possession, viewed horizontally across the times it is entirely posterior to the phenomenon, yet in terms of the sequence of the occurrence of function, there is also non-possession prior to the phenomenon in the future for a past phenomenon, explained in accordance with possession. For a future phenomenon having future non-possession, it is either prior to or posterior to the phenomenon; although in the future there is no temporal sequence, anteriority and posteriority are stated in terms of categories of nature and capacity to occur in function. For a future phenomenon having past or present non-possession, it is solely non-possession prior to the phenomenon. Among present phenomena, past non-possession is solely prior to the phenomenon. For a present phenomenon having future non-possession, viewed horizontally across the times it is entirely posterior to the phenomenon, yet in terms of the sequence of the occurrence of function, there is also non-possession prior to the phenomenon in the future for a present phenomenon.
