Sixth, cessations through deliberation and cessations not through deliberation are not subsumed under the three time periods, and thus cannot be spoken of as prior, posterior, or simultaneous. That there are various acquisitions [for them] means: when one realizes a cessation through deliberation, there is acquisition upon the cessation through deliberation; when conditions are deficient, there is acquisition upon the cessation not through deliberation. Question: "Regarding the present forbearance of the category of the path, how can it have an acquisition prior to the dharma?" Answer: "Although the present forbearance of the category of the path only has an acquisition simultaneous with the dharma, the future forbearance of the category of the path has an acquisition prior to the dharma that is in the present period. Now, stating that the present forbearance has an acquisition prior to the dharma is spoken with respect to the type of forbearance, because the acquired dharma is discussed according to its type." Another explanation: "Although this present forbearance is only simultaneous with the dharma, if it were not manifested, there would be an acquisition prior to the dharma; spoken with respect to what is possible, it is said that the present forbearance has an acquisition prior to the dharma." Another explanation: "Although this present forbearance is only simultaneous with the dharma and lacks an acquisition prior to the dharma, by virtue of this present forbearance having an acquisition prior to the dharma that is in the future period, this future acquisition—when viewed horizontally across time periods—is actually posterior to the present forbearance, yet is named prior to the dharma. It is not named posterior to the dharma because, if this acquisition does not arise, that is all; but if it does arise, it must precede that present forbearance. Spoken with respect to its capacity to activate its function, it is said to have an acquisition prior to it."
