Explanation: 'The last cause' refers to the ripening cause (vipāka-hetu), because it is stated last among the six causes; the first result, that of ripening, is obtained from this cause. 'The first cause' refers to the efficient cause (kāraṇa-hetu), because it is stated first among the six causes; the later result, that of predominance, is obtained from this cause. Because the efficient cause possesses predominant power, the result induced and obtained is called 'predominant'. The result of predominance is a dependent compound (tatpuruṣa). That is, the efficient cause does not obstruct dharmas, hence it receives the name 'predominant'. Alternatively, the efficient cause also possesses superior power, just as the ten bases and elements do regarding the five bodies of consciousness, and the karma of sentient beings does regarding the receptacle world. The 'ten bases' refer to the five faculties and five sense-objects directly producing the five consciousnesses. Furthermore, faculties such as the ear also have mutually predominant power to produce eye-consciousness, etc., because upon hearing, one then gives rise to the desire to see with pleasure. That is, hearing with the ear gives rise to the delight of seeing forms, whereupon eye-consciousness is produced; thus the ear faculty has predominant power and can produce eye-consciousness.
