且初列十二心者，論先問云：「前已總說諸心、心所前能為後等無間緣，未決定說何心無間？有幾心生？復從幾心有何心起？今當定說（結前問起）。謂且略說，有十二心（答也）。云何十二心（問也）？」頌曰：

First, enumerating the twelve minds: the treatise first asks: "Previously it was generally stated that preceding minds and mental factors can serve as the immediately contiguous condition for subsequent ones, but it has not been determined which mind is immediately contiguous, how many minds arise, and from how many minds which minds arise. Now this will be determined (concluding the preceding and raising the question). Briefly speaking, there are twelve minds (the reply). What are the twelve minds (the question)?" The verse says:
