"Dvija, you have now passed beyond your prime (the commentary notes: there was a non-Buddhist brāhmaṇa named Dvija, who came to see the World-Honoured One in his old age; the World-Honoured One reproached him: 'You are now old, and have passed beyond your prime.' Outside the womb there are five stages: first, infant; second, boy; third, youth; fourth, prime of life; fifth, old age); / having reached decline, you are near to King Yama (having reached the stage of old age and decline), / and wishing to proceed on the road ahead, you have no provisions (no provisions of morality, concentration, and wisdom); / seeking to stay in between, there is nowhere to halt (the Mahāsāṃghikas say: this verse says 'in between there is nowhere to halt', which clearly indicates there is no intermediate existence; if there were an intermediate existence, then there would be somewhere to halt)." The author of the treatise resolves this, explaining: "The intention of this verse is to show that among those humans, one quickly returns to dissolution without any temporary pause, which is termed 'nowhere to halt'. Alternatively, intermediate existence is termed 'nowhere to halt' because in order to reach the place of rebirth, it likewise does not pause temporarily, its movement being unobstructed."
