Second, concerning the generation of understanding through wisdom: this treatise is the hidden key to the four Āgamas, the mysterious gateway to the six Abhidharma texts (ṣaṭpādābhidharma), the spring and source of the characteristics of dharmas, and the great ocean of doctrinal approaches. Its text is pure and smooth as polished jade; its principles are clear and bright as the moon and blossoms. It opens the darkened minds of students and elicits the brilliant wisdom of the wise. Therefore a verse below says: "I have already briefly stated the compass / to open the poisoned-arrow entry of wisdom for the wise." Just as when the body is slightly wounded and a little poison is applied, in an instant the poisonous vapors permeate the entire body—so too with this treatise: when it opens a small entryway of wisdom, people of wisdom are able to awaken and penetrate deeply. Because it resembles an entry of poison, it is called the 'poisoned-arrow entry of wisdom'. The name 'Treatise of the Wise' arose from this.
