'Who pulls sentient beings out from the mire of saṃsāra' praises the virtue of benefiting others. All sentient beings are submerged in the mire of saṃsāra without rescue; the World-Honoured One takes pity, reaches out the hand of the appropriate true Dharma teachings according to their capacities, and pulls them out to save them. This is the virtue of benevolence, having great compassion as its essence. As for 'sentient beings' (sattva), it is because they undergo manifold births and deaths. As for 'mire', it has the vipāka-fruit of contaminated karma and afflictions as its essence. Afflictions are like water, and karma-vipāka is like earth; through their mingling together, they become the mire of saṃsāra.
