Now, what illuminates the darkness beneath heaven—is it not the blazing sun alone? What stirs the ten thousand things to completion—is it not the gentle wind alone? What rectifies the great teaching and delivers the times—is it not the Bodhisattva alone? Here there was a Great Being named Vasubandhu, who propagated the Way across the Five Indies and authored treatises numbering a thousand, illuminating the orthodox footsteps of our Master and unravelling the heterodox tangles of the tīrthikas; his merits cannot be detailed in full. Among his thousand works, the Abhidharmakośa is one. It encompasses the six feet and embraces the eight aggregates. Although its doctrines draw from various schools, its standard is strictly orthodoxy; hence the scholars of the Western Regions called it the Treatise of the Wise. As for its exposition of the seven branches of unmanifest form (avijñapti), it provides the brushwork for transmitting the vinaya; its discussions of the three categories of aggregates and realms provide luster for propagating the sūtras. The radiant sun of the Buddha truly resides herein.
