As for "And when earlier grades are severed": regarding the nine grades of anuśayas in the stage of the path of cultivation, whichever of the first eight grades is severed is called 'earlier grades are severed'. When an earlier grade has been severed, the later grades have not yet been severed. Those that are capable of cognizing this earlier grade still bind that earlier grade; therefore, although the earlier grade is severed, the later grades still bind it; this is called 'severed, yet not disconnected from bondage'.
