The commentary says: For the factors leading to penetration to arise in this life, one must have given rise to the factors leading to liberation in a previous life. For all who initially cultivate the factors leading to liberation, they attain liberation at the quickest in three lives: that is, in the first life one gives rise to the factors leading to liberation; in the second life one gives rise to the factors leading to penetration; in the third life one is only then able to enter the noble [path] and even attain arhatship. For a śrāvaka, it is at the quickest three lives and at the slowest sixty kalpas; for a pratyekabuddha, it is at the quickest four lives and at the slowest one hundred kalpas. The factors leading to liberation are accomplished through hearing and reflection; because they pertain only to the dispersed stage, they take the three karmas as their essential nature.
