As for 'the fundamental wholesome immaterial [absorptions] do not cognize the lower defiled,' the wholesome immaterial absorptions subsumed under the fundamental stages do not cognize the defiled phenomena of the lower stages. There are no phenomena of their own or higher stages that they cannot cognize; they can only cognize the lower undefiled phenomena of the path of the category of subsequent cognition (anvayajñāna). The threshold concentrations of the immaterial also cognize the lower stage, because their path of uninterrupted action necessarily cognizes the lower.
