'The immeasurables are four, because of counteracting hatred and the like;
benevolence and compassion are non-hatred in nature, sympathetic joy is joy, equanimity is non-greed.
Their aspects, respectively, are granting bliss and removing suffering,
rejoicing, and being equal toward sentient beings;
they take sentient beings of the desire realm as object;
sympathetic joy is in the first two dhyānas; the rest are in six, or five and ten;
they cannot abandon afflictions;
arising in humans, they are achieved through concentration in three.'
