"Bound to the three realms or unbound, there are three" is the section on the realms of bondage. "Bound to the three realms or unbound" are the unpossessed phenomena. "Three" refers to the non-possessions. That is, phenomena belonging to the three realms and unbound phenomena each have non-possessions of the three realms. For example, that a phenomenon of the desire realm has non-possessions of the three realms means: a sentient being of the desire realm not obtaining a desire-realm phenomenon has a non-possession bound to the desire realm; a sentient being of the form realm not obtaining a desire-realm phenomenon has a non-possession bound to the form realm; a sentient being of the formless realm not obtaining a desire-realm phenomenon has a non-possession bound to the formless realm. Because non-possession is determined by its basis, it extends across the three realms according to its basis. Just as desire-realm phenomena have non-possessions of the three realms, form- and formless-realm phenomena having non-possessions of the three realms should be understood by analogy with the desire realm. If unbound phenomena have non-possessions of the three realms: in the desire realm, not obtaining an unbound phenomenon, the non-possession is bound to the desire realm; in the form realm, not obtaining an unbound phenomenon, the non-possession is bound to the form realm; in the formless realm, not obtaining an unbound phenomenon, the non-possession is bound to the formless realm.
