The commentary says: The wholesome minds of the three realms are each divided into two kinds, distinguished into acquired through preparation and innate. The unimpeded of the desire realm is divided into four minds: first, born of maturation; second, the paths of deportment; third, the fields of craft; fourth, the mind of the fruit of supernormal power. The unimpeded of the form realm is divided into three kinds, excluding the fields of craft, because in the higher realm there are no activities of producing various crafts. In the formless realm, the unimpeded is only one, namely, born of maturation. Thus, the unimpeded [minds] discussed before combine to make eight kinds. In this way, the twelve become twenty minds, namely: eight of the desire realm: two wholesome, two defiled, and four neutral minds; six kinds of the form realm: from the preceding eight minds, unwholesome and craft, these two, are excluded; four of the formless realm: from the preceding six, deportment and the fruit of supernormal power, these two minds, are further excluded. Together with the learner and non-learner, they therefore make twenty.
