The prose commentary explains the two sections of the general and the particular, and is divided into two. The explanation of the first verse has three parts: first, citing; second, negating; third, explaining. The first line is as in the text. From "This matter is not so" onward, the second part generally negates. These two gates explain the upper half. From "Why?" onward, the third part explains the lower half, and is again divided into two: first, a direct refutation; second, a refutation based on the intended sense. Within the direct refutation there are again three parts: first, generally indicating the fault of permanence; from "Why?" onward, next explaining the fault of permanence; from "because there would be the fault of impermanence" onward, third concluding the fault of permanence. Within the explanation there are again three parts: first, the explanation by doctrine; from "For example" onward, second, the explanation by simile; from "If it was previously a deva" onward, third, the application of the simile. The main idea here clarifies that if past and present self are one, then deva and human would be of one body, and the noble and the base would have the same substance. From "If it is said that the self of the prior lifetime does not become the self of the present lifetime" onward, the second part refutes based on the intended sense. Within the text there are again three parts: first, citing and establishing; second, generally negating; third, explaining the difficulty. Within the text of citing there are three: doctrine, simile, and application. First is the explanation by doctrine; from "Just as when a person washes clothes" onward, second, the explanation by simile; from "In this way, when I receive the body of a deva" onward, third, the application of the simile. From "This matter is not so" onward, the second part generally negates. From "Why?" onward, the third part explains the negation. Within the text there are again two parts: first, refuting the explanation by doctrine; from "Now the washer" onward, second, refuting the simile. This is again divided into two: first, determining it through two horns; next, posing two difficulties, as in the text.
