The chapter opens in three parts: first, refuting the external metaphorical exposition; from 'Question: Why speak of the burning and the burnable?' onward, second, refuting their doctrinal exposition; from 'If a person asserts the existence of a self' onward, third, rebuking them once both doctrine and metaphor are exhausted. The first two gates examine non-existence on the basis of right contemplation; the next one rebukes the heterodox mind for asserting existence. Concerning the refutation of the metaphorical exposition, there are six gates overall: first, the gate of identity and difference; second, the gate of mutual dependence; third, the gate of having a cause or lacking a cause; fourth, the gate of internal and external; fifth, the gate of the three times; sixth, the gate of the fivefold search. The first gate has two parts: first, the prose; second, the root verse. The prose has four parts: 1. the thesis; 2. the refutation; 3. the salvage; 4. the refutation of the salvage. Within the thesis there are three parts: first, the doctrinal exposition; from 'like the burning and the burnable' onward, second, the metaphorical exposition; from 'the burning is the experiencer' onward, third, applying the metaphor.
