"If it were severed by seeing the truths, then karma would reach similarity": the fifth section refutes divergent views. Master Tanying said: 'What is severed by seeing the truths has nothing indeterminate at all; it invariably obtains retribution. If this unerring phenomenon were severed by seeing the truths, it would obtain retribution. It is already indeterminate, yet would again obtain an indeterminate retribution, hence it says "reach similarity." An indeterminate obtaining retribution is called ruining karma.' Another explanation: 'Karma reaches similarity' means that 'reach' (zhi) refers to acquisition (prāpti); acquisition applies to the three natures, and on the side of wholesome and unwholesome, it also induces retribution; the unerring phenomenon is merely indeterminate, so it does not induce retribution. Now if seeing the truths were to sever the unerring phenomenon, then the unerring phenomenon would also be unwholesome, and would then have to induce retribution, being similar to acquisition; hence it says 'then karma would reach similarity.' Yet another explanation: the four schools all explain that the unerring phenomenon is indeterminate and not severed; if one were now to say that the unerring phenomenon is severed, then the unerring phenomenon would be of the nature of delusion and no longer indeterminate; if it were of the nature of delusion, it would be able to induce retribution, which is precisely karma; hence it says 'and karma.' Since it is karma, it would then obtain retribution, which is called 'reaching similarity'—just as wholesome karma obtaining a pleasant fruit is called similarity, and evil obtaining a painful fruit is also called similarity; this is a similar cause [producing] a similar fruit. This explanation is the most excellent. Question: Why is it called ruining karma? Answer: If the unerring phenomenon were severed, it would induce retribution; for an indeterminate to induce retribution is to ruin karma, just like making the debt bond itself repay the debt, which is called ruining karma.
