Fifth, discerning the ontological essence of the teaching that expresses: it takes names, sentences, phonemes, and the voice upon which they rely as its intrinsic nature. Alternatively, it is said that five dharmas constitute its nature: first, names; second, sentences; third, utterances; fourth, graphemes; and fifth, sounds. However, discussing this essence comprehensively, there are altogether four tiers: first, in terms of phenomena, it possesses both nominal and real dharmas, as distinguished above; second, in terms of reality, reducing the nominal to the real, it has only sound as its nature; third, in terms of similitude, it is manifested by consciousness-only, having similitude-sound and so forth as its nature; fourth, in terms of the nature, it means that these sounds and so forth are empty and without intrinsic nature, having neither-name-nor-sound and neither-non-name-nor-non-sound as their intrinsic nature, which refers to the nature that is free from nature.
