Second, determining that which is refuted: some masters state that this Three Treatise tradition only refutes the real self and real dharmas fabricated as parikalpita by the Hīnayāna, non-Buddhists, and so on; it does not refute the paratantra nature of the Mahāyāna, because it is illusory existence and not a fault. If this were also refuted, it would be subsumed under nihilistic and wrongly grasped emptiness, and would not be the correct Dharma. Others state: the Three Treatises refute everything without exception. Even if it is the paratantra established in treatises such as the Yogācāra of the Mahāyāna, it is also refuted here, because among all conditionally arisen phenomena, there are none that are not empty. If this were not refuted, views would not perish, and the principle would not be exhaustively realised.
