Second, the refutation of dharmas has two parts: first, restating the claim, and next, refuting and rejecting it. In the refutation, first there is a verse and then the explanation. In the verse, it briefly adduces that self-production does not succeed; the first half refutes it with reference to the unproduced, and the second half refutes it with reference to the already produced. In the explanation there are two parts: first, explaining the single verse, and next, summarizing the chapter. In the former there are two parts: first, explaining arising, and next, extending the analogy to abiding and cessation. In the former there are three parts: first, explaining the refutation of self-production; second, explaining the refutation of producing the other; third, jointly concluding and reproving the error. In the first there are three parts: first, fixing the premise; second, from 'If not yet produced' onward, the direct refutation. First it refutes with reference to the unproduced: since the self does not yet exist, what could produce itself? From 'If you say already produced' onward, it refutes with reference to the already produced: since it has already arisen, why would it need to produce itself again? Third, from 'Therefore' onward, the conclusion. Second, from 'If it does not produce itself' onward, refuting production of the other: it does not even produce itself, how much less can it produce another? Third, from 'What you say' onward, jointly concluding and reproving the error. Second, extending the analogy to abiding and cessation can be understood. Second, from 'Therefore' onward, summarizing the entire chapter.
