One states: The eye-consciousness and its mental factors arise from the same category of objective aspects transformed by the ālaya as their fundamental basis; this is called having 'the same cognitive object.' The mind and its mental factors each separately transform distinct subjective representations; this is called 'not the same mental representation.' As for the meaning of mental representation (ākāra): 'activity' (ākāra/行) refers to the perceiving aspect, and 'aspect' (nimitta/相) refers to the objective aspect; being the aspect of the activity, it is called 'mental representation'—this is a tatpuruṣa compound. One should not raise the objection: 'If the eighth consciousness lacks a fundamental basis, how can it be said to have the same cognitive object?' For it takes the various aspects transformed by another's eighth consciousness as its fundamental basis.
