If we rely on fascicle fifty-nine, it says: All afflictions of an entire realm can effect rebirth. The Tripiṭaka Master explains: When about to end life and at the final mind of intermediate existence, craving must definitely arise, because this craving properly moistens rebirth; immediately prior to these two times, other fetters may arise to assist in moistening rebirth, since craving properly moistens rebirth. Therefore, this treatise states: When about to end life, up until one has not reached the stage of confused thought, self-love, practiced over a long time, actively manifests. The fifth fascicle of the Abhidharmasamuccaya says: As for the power of continuity, there are nine kinds of minds at life's end conjoined with the self-body, which respectively cause life to continue in the desire, form, and formless realms within the three realms. The Mahāyānasaṃgraha also says: If there were no path of cultivation, the formations of ignorance would not mature. The Daśabhūmika Sūtra also says: Consciousness is the seed, water of craving is the moisture, covered by other fetters, producing the name-and-form body.
