今瑜伽顯揚數百萬為億，十億為俱胝，故言百俱胝為一佛土。華嚴千萬為億，名百萬億，智度論十萬為億，名百億。則此三千乃至施作佛事者，昔來相傳諸世界中所起佛俱從一報身佛變化所起，則於一世界唯有一佛化身，是則餘佛不起化身。若爾便違本願，是故若以前後竪望，則於多劫無佛出世。若於現在橫論，十方世界乃有無邊佛出，一一化佛皆是十方報佛同化，以諸如來於諸世界盡有大悲起化本願，如在一室燃眾多燈，一時發光光皆相遍，諸佛如來菩薩起化身無別亦爾，事發同故。若以末從本，本別末別，得言化佛有多，但相貌難分不可辨異。

Now, the Yogācāra and the Prakaraṇāryavācā reckon one million as an yì, and ten yì as a koṭi; therefore they speak of a hundred koṭis as one buddha-field. The Avataṃsaka reckons ten million as an yì, naming it a million yì. The Da zhidu lun reckons one hundred thousand as an yì, naming it ten billion. Thus, regarding "these three thousand [realms]... performs buddha-work": traditionally it has been transmitted that the buddhas arising in the various worlds all arise from the transformation of a single reward-body buddha; thus in a single world there is only the transformation body of one buddha, and other buddhas do not manifest transformation bodies. If that were so, it would contradict their original vows. Therefore, if viewed vertically across earlier and later times, for many kalpas no buddha would appear in the world. If discussed horizontally in the present, throughout the worlds of the ten directions there are indeed boundless buddhas appearing; each transformation buddha is equally transformed by the reward buddhas of the ten directions. Because all the Tathāgatas have the original vow of great compassion to manifest transformations in all worlds, just as when many lamps are lit in a single room, their lights shine simultaneously and pervade one another, so too is it without distinction when all the buddha-tathāgatas and bodhisattvas manifest transformation bodies, because they arise in common for the same purpose. If one traces the branch back to the root, the roots being distinct, the branches are distinct, so one may say that the transformation buddhas are many, but their features are difficult to divide and impossible to distinguish.
