梵云步彌，此云地者，生成住持義也。始自五識終暨無餘，凡聖因果統無不備，皆具能生成住持，有類於地故云也。

The Sanskrit says bhūmi, which is translated here as stage (or ground, di), meaning generating, producing, and maintaining. From the five consciousnesses at the beginning to the remainderless [nirvāṇa] at the end, from ordinary beings to noble ones, causes and fruitions are fully equipped without exception; all possess the ability to generate, produce, and maintain, having an analogy to the earth (ground); hence it is so named.
