Above, the five gates analyzing the essence of the stage have concluded. Below, second, ten gates are subsequently used to explain the meaning of the stage. The text is divided into two: first, explaining the ten gates; second, concluding generally with a verse. Regarding the ten gates, as the subsequent verse says: Aggregates of form, associated categories, the world, and conditions, gates of distinction such as the wholesome, ending with the affairs of skill in means. Its gates of distinction such as the wholesome are threefold: first, distinction by the three natures; second, distinction by increasing sense-bases; third, distinction by explaining the names of the sense-bases; hence there are ten gates. Within the first part there are again two: first, subsuming the five into three divisions, which, when individually explained, comprise eight gates; second, from "Furthermore, it should be known that the aggregates are subsumed under skill..." onward, explaining the latter two gates. Within the first part there are three: first, mentioning the previous five gates subsumed under the three divisions to introduce the topic of the treatise; next, from "Now we shall first explain the dharmas of form-aggregates..." onward, individually explaining the eight gates; finally, concluding generally with a verse, summarizing the five into three. Unconditioned dharmas are dharmas among those cognized objects. As for excluding provisional dharmas: here, intending only to analyze real dharmas, four are subsumed into three, excluding non-associated [formations] and forms belonging to the base of mental objects because, lacking resistance, they are designated provisional existents. The subsequent text only speaks of form mastered through concentration as real dharma; hence, although the subsequent text speaks of provisional dharmas, they do not form a separate section. In the individual explanation of the eight gates, first, the text explaining the aggregate of form is divided into two: first, the heading; second, the explanation. The explanation is divided into nine: first, explaining the creation of form by the primary elements through five causes; second, explaining the distinction between the existence and non-existence of minute atoms; third, explaining the non-separation of the primary elements and the derived forms; fourth, explaining the quantity of entities in form aggregates; fifth, explaining the continuity and interruption of various forms; sixth, explaining the sūtra text; seventh, explaining that the primary elements in various form aggregates are not deficient; eighth, explaining the distinctions among the three kinds of form aggregates; ninth, explaining that form aggregates operate in reliance on the six bases.
