On the passage below beginning "Further, as the sūtra states": Sixth, within the distinguishing of the three natures, [the text] clarifies [them] by increasing numerical enumeration. It establishes only three wholesome ones and no ultimate truth because it speaks of the conditioned. "Wholesome [actions] producing pleasant fruit" refers to the aforementioned giving and so forth that are tainted, which are able to induce pleasant fruit. "Wholesome [actions] producing the fruit of detachment" refers to the aforementioned taintless giving and so forth. "Immeasurable wholesome [actions]" are the four immeasurables. "Wholesome [actions] with support" are wholesome [actions] that have an objective support and seek the three realms of existence. "Wholesome [actions] without support" are wholesome [actions] that have no support or seeking and aspire to nirvāṇa; alternatively, giving with material things is called wholesome with support, and rejoicing in wholesome deeds without material things is called wholesome without support. "Wholesome [factors] subsumed under the root and the retinue": the essence of wisdom arisen from cultivation is named the root, and the associated five aggregates are named the retinue; alternatively, they are the wholesome [factors] subsumed under the two absorptions of the root and the preparatory [stages]. "Eight kinds of production through merit": the petty scattered kings of the desire realm count as the first, ministers count as the second, which, added to the six heavens of the desire realm, make eight; this is different from the ancient explanation that excludes ministers from the desire realm and takes wheel-turning kings, with wheel-turning kings counting as the ninth, and the unshakeable wholesome counting as the tenth, referring to the wholesome of the form, formless, and taintless realms. "The meaning of taking pleasant fruit" explains the tainted wholesome. "Thorough knowledge of affairs" explains the taintless wholesome; skill regarding the truth of the path is called wholesome knowledge; both facts and principles are also "affairs"; "dharma", "thing", and "affair" are common terms for all phenomena. "And the meaning of its fruit" refers to the truth of cessation, which is called wholesome because it is secure. In the four kinds of undetermined—the fruition-born, a portion of bodily deportment, and arts and crafts: as stated in fascicle fifty-five, fruition-born is exclusively undetermined, while the other two or three can be found [as diverse], and one has two types; therefore, bodily deportment and arts and crafts run through the three natures. The text only distinguishes the defiled and the undetermined, hence it says "a portion". If various arts and crafts are merely for amusement, engaging in arts and crafts with a defiled mind for play is defiled; there are also those who engage in arts and crafts with an undetermined mind for amusement, which the text omits and does not discuss. Where it says "not for livelihood... and the rest are undetermined", in principle there is also generating the activity of arts and crafts with a defiled mind for livelihood, and also cultivating the notion of artistic activity with a defiled mind to surpass others, and also investigating and discerning out of greed for fame and gain to generate artistic activity; here, focusing on the prominent characteristics, [the text] merely mentions one side as a representative example. Bodily deportment is also like this. Emanation has only two kinds, wholesome and undetermined; fascicle fifty-five states: "Generating emanation in order to guide others or to benefit sentient beings should be known as wholesome; if wishing to test oneself or play with spiritual superknowledges, it is called undetermined." This has no defilement; if evaluated in terms of innate nature, it also extends to the unwholesome.
