yet in the present explanation, below the precepts of collecting wholesome dharmas and the precepts of benefiting sentient beings, it does not conclude the second question, but only concludes abiding in the precepts of collecting wholesome dharmas, etc.? What is the intention? Interpretation: It is merely an abridged concluding text. Taking the former to exemplify the latter, in the restraint precepts both are concluded and stated, and by analogy the latter two should be known, hence it is not stated. There is another explanation: in the opening text of the prātimokṣa restraint, there is only the statement 'abiding in the prātimokṣa restraint' and no statement 'well guarding the prātimokṣa precepts', while the concluding text below concludes both, having the statement 'well guarding'; in its third, the explanation of the precepts of benefiting sentient beings, the opening only has the single word 'abiding' and lacks the second statement 'well cultivating the precepts of collecting wholesome dharmas', while in its concluding text, both kinds are concluded together; the opening of its second, the precepts of collecting wholesome dharmas, only has the word 'abiding', and its concluding text says 'called abiding in the precepts of collecting wholesome dharmas, swiftly able to collect wholesome dharmas in all their forms'—the intention is precisely to conclude the statement 'well cultivating the precepts of collecting wholesome dharmas'. Reasoning by analogy: the prātimokṣa precepts have both in the opening and in the conclusion; the collecting of goodness and benefiting of beings mutually serve as models for each other; collecting goodness has both conclusions with only one opening, while benefiting beings has two conclusions; by analogy, the two middle questions open into nine, so the text is incomplete. Another interpretation: the previous question was simply three questions, namely 'abiding in the restraint while being able to well guard'—this is merely an elaboration of meaning, not having two questions; the subsequent benefiting beings and collecting goodness by analogy are also just one question; hence in the explanation below, the opening and concluding are also only of one kind, so there is no need to make laborious interpretations.
