Vyākhyānasaṃgrahaṇī 3 states: What is the text? There are six kinds: first, collections of names; second, collections of phrases; third, collections of phonemes; fourth, speech; fifth, aspects; sixth, requests according to capacity. Below it says: As for speech, it should be known to briefly possess eight parts: foremost, melodious, and so forth. By that speech being conjoined with words and phrases, up to being provisions of constant and careful discernment, one can expound the true Dharma, and so forth. These eight kinds of speech briefly possess three virtues: first, the virtue of orientation, namely the first kind; second, the virtue of intrinsic nature, namely the next two kinds; third, the virtue of preparatory application, namely the remaining kinds. 'Conjoined' means that collections of names, phrases, and phonemes are well established in proper sequence; furthermore, it means conjoined based on the four kinds of principles. 'Companioning' means being able to accomplish the sequence. 'Compliant' means explaining the sequence. 'Clear' means the words and phrases are distinct. 'Purely supportive' means skillfully entering the minds of the assembly. 'Commensurate' means matching the assembly, deserving reverence, according with the Dharma, inducing the meaning, and conforming to the proper time. 'Provisions of constant and careful discernment': examining what is to be done and perpetually doing it, hence called 'constant and careful'; 'its discernment' refers to right view and so forth, because this is the provision for them. However, Master Ce divided these phrases such as 'conjoined' by taking discernment and appropriate as the seventh; thus Master Ji decided them to be eight phrases and explained them, taking seven as appropriately constant and careful, and eight as discerning the Dharma of provisions. Now, neither is followed, and it is judged as seven.
