In the explanation: first, through the three kinds of causes of body, speech, and mind, giving and the rest are actively practiced; second, by reason of the two causes of being vast and undefiled, it is supreme and vast—next, [vastness is threefold:] universally for sentient beings, universally in all practices, and universally cultivated at all times; wishing to establish it through four characteristics so as to be undefiled, Master Ce explains these four characteristics by matching them in sequence to the first ground, second ground, third ground, and from the fourth ground upward. Third, through three causes giving and the rest are purified: namely, by being blazing, by being immovable, and by being purified. From the first ground upward is called blazing and immovable; the tenth ground is called purified. Reaching the ultimate ground means the tenth ground, or being bound to one more birth, which means residing in heaven; having a final existence means having already descended to be born into a body. Regarding the third section, explaining the distinction of fruits attained: first it explains attaining the fruit of Buddhahood, and next it explains attaining fruits in the causal state. As to why it only explains that the latter eight attain eight fruits and does not analyze intrinsic nature, Jing says: "Here it intends to explain the attainment of distinct fruits; the latter gates analyze distinct meanings, so the meaning of attaining fruits is evident, whereas the gate of intrinsic nature is general, and so it is not discussed. Furthermore, merely analyzing the attainment of fruits of the latter eight gates already subsumes intrinsic nature within them, because outside the particulars there is no general. Furthermore, intrinsic nature explains the essence, which cannot attain fruits; the eight gates specifically analyze functional application, and so explain the attainment of fruits." Ji further says: "Because the gate of intrinsic nature is not separate from the latter eight gates, it is not stated."
