The term "vipāka" refers to the ālayavijñāna: arising at once to requite causes, constantly arising from beginning to end, and pervading all three realms, it receives the name vipāka. As for "vipākaja" (born of retribution), with the exception of the ālayavijñāna, the retribution five aggregates that arise from retribution seeds are called vipākaja. Nominal seeds, although they do not requite [past karmic] causes, are nevertheless of the class of retribution and are thus also called fruition of retribution (vipākaphala); moreover, because they are induced and activated by ignorance and karmic formations, they are also called fruition of retribution.
