From here below, the fifteenth section explains the four udānas. If written with the character *wen* (嗢), they must all be corrected. The old terminology was imprecise, calling them the four *youdana* (優陀那), translated as 'seals' (mudrā); now it is translated as 'sayings' (udāna), namely what the World-Honoured One constantly recites and speaks. This meaning resembles an unprompted utterance (udāna). In loose translation following its meaning, it may also be called 'seal', or called 'summarized meaning', or called 'indicative sign'. For example, it is said that impermanence is the indicative sign of conditioned phenomena, suffering is the indicative sign of tainted phenomena, non-self is the indicative sign of all phenomena, and the tranquility of nirvāṇa is the indicative sign of unconditioned phenomena. If called *udāna* (嗢拕南), it means a collected verse (saṃgraha-gāthā); because it is here named *udāna* (烏拕南), it is an indicative sign.
