Prophecy has six types. Jing says: '1. The stage of abiding in the lineage without yet generating the mind [for awakening]: this refers to prior to the ten faiths, where having the Mahāyāna lineage, the Buddha confers prophecy on them; 2. The stage of having generated the mind: from the ten faiths onward up to the Dharma Cloud [ground], all are called the stage of mind-generation, where the Buddha confers prophecy on them—this single pair subsumes all prophecies exhaustively; 3. The present stage: directly facing the Buddha and personally receiving the prophecy; 4. Abiding not present: this means without seeking it in the assembly, the Buddha confers prophecy collectively. This second pair also subsumes all, for all prophecies do not exceed the present and the non-present; alternatively, bodhisattvas who have entered the grounds see the true reward-Buddha in every thought-moment and receive prophecy, which is called present, whereas prior to the grounds, they only see other Buddhas and do not see the true body, which is called not present; 5. Having a definite time limit: meaning that in such-and-such a time one will realize awakening; 6. Having no definite time limit: merely conferring prophecy in general, saying: "By practicing this conduct, you will attain buddhahood." This final pair also subsumes all.'
