In the group of nine, the first four are the four aspects under suffering, the next two cravings are the truth of origin, the seventh is the practice of the truth of the path, and the eighth and ninth are the truth of cessation. In the group of ten, the first five are the truth of suffering, karma and affliction are the truth of origin, the next two are the truth of the path, and the tenth is the truth of cessation. Regarding 'the four principles should be known as before': the old treatise says: 'The four kinds of designations of means are as explained previously in the Chapter on Powers and Lineages'—taking the four means of embracing as the four means; this explanation is incorrect. Now according to this treatise, the four principles are as explained in the Śrāvakabhūmi, fascicle twenty-five: the four principles of dependence, and so forth. Among the seven aspects of the śrāvaka vehicle: 1. Unerring wisdom: this brings out the essence of the vehicle, being the mental factor of wisdom among the particular mental states that realizes the truths free from error; 2. Basis of this wisdom: the Tripiṭaka Master says: 'This is the principal mind, and it is also samādhi.' Master Ce says: 'It is the seed-basis and the immediately preceding basis'; 3. Focal object: namely, the four truths; 4. Companions: all the remaining mental factors; 5. Operation: the functional capacity to sever defilements, and so forth; 6. Provisions: the preliminary path of means; 7. Attained fruit: nirvāṇa.
