Jing says: First, explaining the specific names. "Bodhisattva" has two explanations in the *Abhidharmasamuccaya*: one says, because one gives rise to the mind [directed toward] that awakening (bodhi) and sentient beings (sattva), one is named a bodhisattva; the second says, because a sentient being (sattva) gives rise to the mind [directed toward] that awakening (bodhi), one is named a bodhisattva. The name "bodhisattva" applies commonly to the three vehicles, and is therefore a general name. Below, "Mahāsattva" designates only our Great Vehicle as a "great sentient being," and is therefore a specific name. "Accomplished in the illumination of supreme awakening and wisdom," and so forth, explains the reason for acquiring the name "great." Thus, from the boundless ten directions up to the distinct, immeasurable, and boundless internal virtues, names are bestowed in accordance with virtues, and names are likewise immeasurable.
