遠法師云：菩薩諸住漸得漸淨，唯如來住頓得頓淨，教行頓成故名頓得，證行頓顯故名頓淨，何云彼菩薩住，住別所治有無量品，以如來住障唯有一品，故有差別。

Master Yuan states: The various abidings of the bodhisattva are gradually attained and gradually purified; only the Tathāgata abiding is suddenly attained and suddenly purified. Because the practice of teaching is suddenly accomplished, it is called "sudden attainment"; because the practice of realization is suddenly manifested, it is called "sudden purification." Why is this said? Because in those bodhisattva abidings, there are immeasurable grades of things to be cured for each distinct abiding; whereas in the Tathāgata abiding, the obstacles are of only one grade, and thus there is a difference.
