From "dwelling in this abode" onward is the second part, which clarifies the attainment of the forbearance of non-birth through the preceding contemplation. Regarding "with respect to unarisen dharmas, realizing the foremost, supreme, and most pristine forbearance": The first stage also attains the forbearance of non-birth; what is the difference between these two? Ji explains: As stated in the sixth fascicle of the Prakaraṇāryavācā, there are three kinds of forbearance of non-birth: that regarding the parikalpita nature is called "forbearance of fundamental non-birth"; that regarding the paratantra is called "forbearance of spontaneous non-birth"; that regarding the pariniṣpanna is called "forbearance of non-birth free of suffering and defilement." The first stage realizes it through cutting off the two kinds of conceptually constructed grasping, hence it is said to attain the "forbearance of fundamental non-birth." From the eighth stage onward, with ultimate and conventional truth operating simultaneously, one attains both the spontaneous forbearance and the forbearance free of suffering and defilement. Furthermore, from the eighth stage onward, one realizes the pure contemplation of tathatā of a single taste, hence it is called attaining the forbearance of non-birth free of suffering and defilement, whereas before this, one attained the other forbearances of non-birth. Furthermore, prior to this, one attains the forbearance of non-birth regarding portioned life-and-death; from the eighth stage onward, one realizes the forbearance of non-birth regarding life-and-death by transformation. Furthermore, the first stage and so forth have the forbearance of non-birth of not entering the miserable realms; from the eighth stage onward, one has the forbearance of non-birth wherein tainted minds do not arise in alternation.
