In the first section, the meaning of the objection is: The bodhisattvas of the ten stages all cultivate the ten thousand practices; why was it previously stated that the first stage cultivates dāna, the second stage maintains śīla, the third stage cultivates samādhi, the fourth stage cultivates the limbs of awakening, and so forth? Therefore, the treatise resolves this by stating that such described constituent virtues of the subsequent dwellings are not completely lacking in the preceding dwellings, but because they are of inferior grade, they do not fall within the count, and so on. Although they are cultivated in the earlier stages, because they are not yet complete and perfected, they are not established there, and only upon reaching completion in the subsequent stages are they established. Master Tai said: If one relies on the nature of the virtues cultivated within these twelve dwellings of the bodhisattva, they are also fully present in the initial dwelling of gotra; however, because they are not yet complete and perfected, the names of the remaining eleven dwellings are not established. Although there is this explanation, it is not as good as the previous interpretation.
