In the fourth part, clarifying the subsumption of the eight dharmas from the preceding Chapter on Virtues within these thirteen abodes, the Chapter on Virtues says: 'There are eight kinds of dharmas that can fully subsume the entire Mahāyāna: first, the teachings of the Bodhisattva Basket; second, within such Bodhisattva Basket, teachings that reveal the various realities; third, within such Bodhisattva Basket, teachings that reveal the inconceivable, supreme, and vast great power of all buddhas and bodhisattvas; fourth, properly hearing what has been explained above; fifth, properly considering [them] as the prerequisite for proceeding toward the supreme resolve; sixth, proceeding toward the supreme resolve as the prerequisite for entering the characteristics of cultivation; seventh, entering the characteristics of cultivation as the prerequisite for the consummation of the fruits of cultivation; eighth, through precisely such consummation of the fruits of cultivation, ultimate transcendence.' Now, this text says: 'namely, within the first and second abodes, up to hearing, receiving, and contemplating'—the two abodes of gotra and resolute conduct subsume the preceding five dharmas within the Bodhisattva Basket, because the first three among the eight dharmas are all the Bodhisattva Basket; giving rise to faith and resolute understanding and hearing and receiving is that fourth dharma; contemplating is that fifth dharma. In truth, the subsequent bhūmis are not devoid of these five; this is spoken from the standpoint of the time when their superior functioning increases. Regarding the statement 'In the third abode, attaining the supreme resolve and advancing toward the superior cultivation of the preliminary practice', this subsumes one part of the sixth, namely 'proceeding toward the supreme resolve as the prerequisite'; because in the first bhūmi one first attains the signless, which is the preliminary practice of advancing toward the signless, it obtains one part. Regarding the statement 'In all the rest, up to the abode of the signless with preparation and with effort, attaining vast cultivation', this subsumes one part of the sixth, namely 'entering the characteristics of cultivation'; together with the first bhūmi, it generally subsumes the signless cultivation of the sixth; this is the cultivation of signless cultivation, and being vast like this, unlike the first bhūmi, it earns the name of preliminary practice cultivation. 'In the bodhisattva abodes subsumed under the above three kinds of pure conduct, the fruits of cultivation are consummated'—the eighth, ninth, and tenth bhūmis subsume that seventh, 'entering the characteristics of cultivation as the prerequisite for the consummation of the fruits of cultivation'. 'In the Tathāgata abode, one should know that one obtains ultimate transcendence'—this subsumes that eighth, 'through precisely such consummation of the fruits of cultivation, ultimate transcendence.'
