Both the new and old translations of the treatise have twelve phrases in succession to remedy the preceding twelve difficulties: in this text, the first says, 'Bodhisattvas who encounter various difficult situations, or therein, should observe the light and heavy, and employ means as appropriate'—the old treatise says, 'bodhisattvas, toward all sentient beings, do not observe the light and heavy but employ means'—this remedies the first difficulty above. The second says, 'Or therein, one should carefully discriminate persons'—the old says, 'or examining people and practicing toward non-[people]'—which remedies the second difficulty above. The third says, 'Or therein, energetically seizing upon conditions and activating the causes of gathering'—the old says, 'or through energetic means creating causes and conditions'—which remedies the third difficulty. The fourth says, 'If one makes correct vows'—the old says, 'or cultivating correct vows'—which remedies the fourth difficulty. The fifth says, 'Or therein, subduing one's mind and not letting it scatter'—the old says, 'or purifying faithful mind'—which remedies the fifth difficulty. The sixth says, 'Therein, settling one's mind'—the old says, 'or focusing the mind'—which remedies the sixth difficulty. The seventh says, 'Vigorously discerning'—the old says, 'thinking and observing'—which remedies the seventh difficulty. The eighth says, 'Without generating aversion'—the old says, 'without weariness'—which remedies the eighth difficulty. The ninth says, 'And being naturally patient'—the old says, 'or sometimes pliant'—which remedies the ninth difficulty. The tenth says, 'Or therein, practicing intentional renunciation'—the old says, 'or sometimes practicing renunciation'—which remedies the tenth difficulty. The [eleventh] says, 'Or therein, generating diligent vigor, blazing without laxity'—the old says, 'or sometimes vigor'—which remedies the eleventh difficulty. The twelfth says, 'Or therein, skillful means and correctly practicing'—the old says, 'or sometimes clever means'—which remedies the [twelfth] difficulty.
