Regarding 'Without effort... up to falling into the third determination': Jing says: in the previous Chapter on Virtues, three determinations were explained: 1. determination of gotra, because one who possesses the gotra will definitely become a Buddha; 2. determination of the aspiration, because after arousing the aspiration one definitely will not retrogress; 3. determination of unfruitless practice. The levels of these three determinations are difficult to know: prior to the ten faiths is called gotra; the ten faiths are called the aspiration; from the ten understandings onward is called unfruitless practice. Since the treatise text here states that the eighth stage is called the third determination of unfruitless practice, one knows that the preceding seven stages are called the determination of the aspiration, and prior to the stages is collectively called the determination of gotra, because prior to them there is not yet any active taintless functioning, but only the maturation of taintless seeds. Ji says: the determination of the aspiration refers to entering the first stage; now the eighth stage is called the determination of unfruitless practice. Some explain: this third refers to being on the first stage; now we take the previous explanation, as in the text of the Prakaraṇāryavācā, where being on the first stage refers to the time of attaining mastery. Another explanation: this eighth stage is the third asaṃkhyeya [eon], where, as in the vipāka abiding, practice arises spontaneously, and because there is no longer any tainted mind intervening, it is called determination.
