Regarding 'equal to all awakenings': this refers to the next six [purities]. Conforming to all Buddhadharmas acts as a cause equal to the awakenings of the three periods of time; hence it says 'equal to all awakenings.' Although there are six kinds, their essentials are subsumed under three: namely, the three trainings. The first is morality, the next is concentration, and the latter four are wisdom. Although divided into seven—the so-called seven purities: 1. purity of morality; 2. purity of concentration; 3. purity of views, which eliminates the view of self; 4. purity of crossing beyond doubt, which eliminates doubt; 5. purity of the path and non-path, which eliminates attachment to rules and rituals—these first five are generally the same in the Great and Lesser Vehicles. The latter two have different names in the Hīnayāna: 6. purity of practice, and 7. purity of the abandonment of practice, because the Hīnayāna aims at total cessation. In the Mahāyāna, the sixth is called the purity of practice and abandonment, and the seventh is called the supreme purity of contemplating the factors of awakening, because in the Mahāyāna one seeks supreme excellence based on that abandonment. These seven purities thus constitute the six equalities, combining the two of crossing doubt and views into one: the equality of crossing doubt and views.
