Furthermore, according to the text below, if considered in terms of active manifestations that are inseparable, there are only seven entities: the eye, the body, the earth element, and the four dusts. From this, one would infer that sound is also appropriated. If so, does the ālaya not have sound and the three great elements as intentional objects? Answer: Just as the base of the eye faculty has only the earth element because it has the nature of solidity, and not the other three great elements because it is not made of them and thus they are not the base of the faculty; furthermore, these three are definitely not actively manifest, so what is subsumed under the eye faculty consists of only seven entities. Just as tears and the like of the eye are the water element, these water elements and so forth are generated separately from conditions and do not arise as the same category with the eye faculty. Sound is also like this: because it is intermittent, it is not an intentional object of the ālaya. Master Jing's Supplement and Master Bei's explanation say: The bases of the faculties extend through the five dusts, because sound of the nature of the ear is present in the concurrent great elements. It is also said that in terms of their nature forming the four great elements, the four are complete in all loci; it is only in terms of phenomenal characteristics that they are incomplete. In ultimate principle, the concurrent four dusts have the capacity to generate sound, so they are all called having the nature of sound.
