述曰：緣未必要，須業所滅者，如下界長養根等，第八亦緣，如種雖非業生，第八亦不妨緣。

The commentary explains: Cognition as an object does not necessarily require what is terminated by karma; as with the nutriment-born faculties of the lower realms, the eighth also takes them as objects, just as seeds, though not born of karma, can nevertheless be taken as objects by the eighth.
