13.17

述有二意。一、六識各別依謂六根，通依謂本識，今此分先明第八是五六識通依故，所以合明，前分約自性業用等義，所以別開為一地。二、六識名別種子依，本地分中雖明賴耶，但明種子依，隨六識說，功能各異故，所以別開為二地。

It is stated that there are two intentions. First, the respective distinct supports of the six consciousnesses are the six sense faculties, while their common support is the fundamental consciousness; now, this division first clarifies that the eighth [consciousness] is the common support of the five and sixth consciousnesses, and for that reason they are clarified together; whereas the preceding division was based on the meanings of their self-nature, functional activities, and so forth, and for that reason they were separately opened into distinct stages. Second, the six consciousnesses have distinct seed supports; although the ālayavijñāna was clarified in the Maulī Bhūmiḥ, it was only clarified as seed support, and was spoken of in accordance with the six consciousnesses, their functions being distinct; therefore they were separately opened into two stages.
