To explain weakening and suppression in detail, there are three kinds: first, weakening and suppression by separation, meaning going forth into homelessness and receiving the precepts, staying far away from and severing sense-dust, abandoning and suppressing afflictions—this is wisdom born of birth; second, weakening and suppression by revulsion, meaning precepts: through the characteristics of faults and disadvantages, contemplating the five wondrous desires as being able to harm oneself, harm others, harm both, and so forth, is called the characteristics of faults and disadvantages, or solely through the contemplation of impurity one reviles and suppresses greed to sever it—this pertains to all three wisdoms; third, weakening and suppression by śamatha, meaning suppressing the afflictions of both the desire and form realms; although it also suppresses and eliminates afflictions up to the sphere of nothingness, because it is spoken with respect to the desire realm, it does not mention separation from the formless [realm].
