問曰：此是所緣緣不，答影像當必唯識三世攝，故是所緣緣，此本質無法非是因果，影像可成因果，今就外執破，非大乘中影像不有諸識可行。

Question: "Is this an objective condition (ālambana-pratyaya) or not?" Answer: The mental image (nimitta-bhāga) definitely belongs to consciousness-only and is subsumed within the three times, so it is an objective condition. The external archetype (mūla-bimba) is a non-existent phenomenon and is not cause or effect, whereas the mental image can constitute cause and effect. Here it refutes the external attachment; it does not mean that within Mahāyāna the mental image does not exist for the consciousnesses to operate upon.
