The Tripiṭaka Master says: To establish it solely on the ālayavijñāna as solely the universal retribution contradicts the text of the Prakaraṇāryavācā. That text says that because the duration of the six bases is determined, according to the Viniścaya, the life faculty is said to be entirely ripening-unrecorded; and when the Abhidharma says that the life faculty is named essential unrecorded, it is precisely this ripening-unrecorded, which based on its entity being unrecorded is again named essential unrecorded. However, ripening-unrecorded is narrow and resides solely in the ālaya, whereas the essential is broad. Therefore, the essential unrecorded of the Abhidharma refers to the five faculties, the three sense objects, the life faculty, generic similarity, and the collections of names, phrases, and phonemes. Furthermore, the Abhidharma says that the innately acquired unrecorded refers to the ripening produced by unwholesome and wholesome tainted phenomena, meaning that birth without conception is innately acquired unrecorded.
